The Benefits of Camping with Kids in Alberta
Connecting with Nature
Camping at kid-friendly Alberta campsites is a fantastic way for kids to connect with nature. They’ll be amazed by the starry skies and the wildlife. My own kids still talk about the time we spotted a deer right outside our tent! At our Willey West Campground just outside of Drayton Valley, there are so many opportunities to see all sorts of wildlife, from rabbits and squirrels to deer, elk and more!
Educational Opportunities
Camping isn’t just fun; it’s educational. Kids learn about different plants, animals, and how to respect nature. It’s a living classroom under the open sky. At our Willey West Campground, we have discovery kits – backpacks full of everything you need for a self guided adventure! We have one kit dedicated to learning all about the river valley, another one that teaches all about the night sky, and one that shows participants how to pan for gold in the North Saskatchewan River! We also have little free libraries full of books to read, bike rentals, board games to rent, and hiking trails with interpretive signs!
Family Bonding
There’s something special about sitting around a campfire, sharing stories, and enjoying each other’s company without the distractions of everyday life.

H2: III. Preparing for Your Trip
Essential Gear for Camping with Kids
Pack comfortable sleeping bags, kid-friendly insect repellent, and a first-aid kit. It’s also important to bring a little bit of home with you in the form of a favorite toy or blanket.
Preparing Kids for the Outdoors
Before you head out, talk to your kids about what to expect. Reading books about camping can build excitement and set the right expectations. Talk ahead of time about things like firepit safety, and not feeding wildlife.
Packing Tips for Families
Pack clothes in individual bags for easy access. Bring snacks, games, and a camera to capture those precious moments at Alberta’s kid-friendly campsites. Involve your kids with the packing process and discuss why each item is important.
H2: IV. Activities for Kids at Campsites
Nature Walks and Hiking
Choose trails that are easy for little legs. Make a game out of who can spot the most types of birds or trees.
Fun Camping Games and Crafts
Bring along a nature scavenger hunt list or supplies for simple crafts like leaf rubbing. These activities can keep kids engaged for hours at kid-friendly campsites.
Make Mealtime Fun
Make sure you bring food that kids will love! Camping food doesn’t have to be difficult, and in fact, the simpler, the better! Bring some roasting sticker – perfect for hot dogs and marshmallows – two camping staples! Pie irons are inexpensive and can help you make food like grilled cheese sandwiches, individual pizzas and pies, just to name a few! Other great camping meals you can make easily while camping include macaroni and cheese, taco in a bag, ramen noodles just to name a few! It’s a great time to include them in meal preparation – children will be more likely to eat the food they helped prepare. And you can talk about fire safety at the same time.
H2: V. Safety Tips for Camping with Children
Wildlife Safety
Educate your kids about the local wildlife you may encounter. In Alberta, we have hundreds of different wild animals depending on where you go camping. You could see beavers, rabbits, squirrels, marmots, picas, eagles, cranes, skunks, porcupines and snowy owls! Mid size animals include coyotes, lynx and bobcats. Larger animals include deer, elk, moose, bison and even different species of bears!
Talk to your children about what to do if you do encounter any animals, whether hiking and exploring or while in your campground. My kids will never forget the time a skunk strolled through our campsite! I’ve never seen my kids get so quiet! The skunk simply passed through, minding its own business, and remains a favorite memory to this day! Remember: no feeding the wildlife! Not only is human food unhealthy for wildlife, but they can become dependent on being fed, or become aggressive if they aren’t given their next meal. Watch with binoculars or a camera, but resist the urge to give them tasty morsels.
Water Safety
Always supervise kids near water, even if it’s shallow. Life jackets are a must for little ones.
First Aid and Emergency Preparedness
Have a first-aid kit on hand and know the basics of treating minor injuries. It’s also good to have a plan in case of emergencies.
H2: VI. Making the Most of Your Family Camping Trip

Encouraging Kids to Explore
Give kids the freedom to explore within safe boundaries. It’s amazing what they discover on their own.

Take lots of photos, but also consider keeping a camping journal. It’s a great way to remember your adventures at Alberta’s kid-friendly campsites.
